Day Three: Taipei to Manila
"One night in Manila and the world's your oyster" - I do not really know what those, or the original lyrics mean, but I couldn't get that song out of my head as we flew into Manila and then walked its streets. Asia is like no other place we have seen, it is just so different from North America and Europe, the look is different, the people are different, the feel is different. Different, but good, definitely a new experience. One thing we noticed immediately are the great disparities that are piled right on top of each other. In America we like to separate everything into neat little boxes, we have downtown, and the suburbs, the rich and the poor. Here you can't see where one stops and one starts... It's good to see life at all it's levels, we do a disservice to ourselves when we strive to isolate ourselves.
Thats a Jeepney - its the legitimate bus service of Manila, they have routes and everything. Originally reconstructed WWII Jeeps, they are everywhere, and are decorated and customized by the driver to suit their individual tastes.
